Where several safe-ty-related parts are combined into one overall system, the standard des-cribes how to calculate the PL that can be achieved. For additional guidelines on validation EN ISO 13849-1 refers to Part 2, which was published at the end of 2003. This part provides information PL e (EN ISO 13849-1) Operation of the safety function When the emergency stop button is pressed, the safety functions module detects the button signal and commands the drive to stop the motor by using a deceleration ramp.

The EN 954-1 standard (categories) is being phased out and replaced by EN ISO 13849-1 (PL, Performance Level) and EN 62061 (SIL, Safety Integrity Level). Although the deadline for using EN 954-1 is set to 31/12/2011, it is beneficial to start applying the new standards as soon as possible as many new standards no longer refer to EN 954-1. ISO 13849-1:2015 provides safety requirements and guidance on the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. For these parts of SRP/CS, it specifies characteristics that include the performance level required for carrying out safety functions. The performance level (PL) is designated by an alphabetic character, a thru e, with PLe being the highest risk level. EN/ISO 13849-1 assigns a performance level (PL) rating from a to e, with PLe being the highest risk.
